Envisioned by Sir Kai Ho in 1910, the Chinese Recreation Club stands as one of Hong Kong’s oldest and most storied institutions for health and recreation. To mark a new chapter in its century-long legacy, the Club launched a major renovation in 2020, appointing the design studio via. to lead the interior vision for its new main building. The resulting transformation masterfully blends the Club's rich heritage with contemporary elegance, providing members with a modern sanctuary right in the heart of the city.
The arrival experience begins on the ground floor, opening into a soaring atrium where breeze-brick walls filter soft, natural light across intricate mosaic floors, establishing a serene and minimalist atmosphere. This peaceful aesthetic flows seamlessly into the adjoining lounge, anchored by a reddish-orange mosaic carpet that provides a sense of nostalgic warmth. Surrounded by shelves displaying the Club’s prized volumes and framed by large windows overlooking the outdoor tennis courts, the lounge offers versatile seating perfectly suited for both focused reading and casual conversation.
When it comes to culinary experiences, the Club offers a curated progression of spaces, starting with a sun-dappled, ground-floor café. Featuring a warm palette of cognac upholstery, rich wood fixtures, and classic bentwood-style chairs resting on a woven crosshatch carpet, the café exudes a timeless charm.
Ascending to the first floor, a sophisticated Chinese restaurant serves as an ideal setting for banquets and celebrations. Guests are greeted by a striking terracotta-toned reception desk and tactile, perforated metal panels before stepping into a spacious, light-filled dining hall designed with a warm, inviting palette.
Dedicated entirely to wellness and rejuvenation, the second floor houses an exclusive members-only gymnasium where olive-hued, geometric metal screens create a dynamic and energizing environment. This level also includes private changing rooms utilizing a highly refined, minimalist aesthetic to serve as a quiet retreat for post-workout recovery.
For a more intimate social setting, the third-floor golf bar offers a striking contrast with its discreet, moody elegance. The space features a deep-green tiled bar beautifully complemented by dark wood and metallic accents. Layered lighting fosters a cozy, exclusive atmosphere, while strategically placed metal rod screens provide guests with a comforting sense of privacy.
Further ascending to the upper level reveals an expansive indoor pool framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that capture panoramic views of the city skyline, thoughtfully arranged with tiered seating on one side and relaxed poolside loungers on the other.
