Introduction | Divine Inspiration – Lee Broom

Divine Inspiration

Lee Broom

Lee Broom debuts new lighting collections in a landmark show during Milan design week 2022.

Lee Broom launched a series of six new ethereal lighting collections inspired by places of worship during Milan Design Week marking the brand’s 15-year anniversary. The 600 sq meter show attracted over 20,000 visitors during the week making it the most visited and the largest Lee Broom exhibition to date.

Described by the New York Times as ‘post-war architecture turned into divine inspiration’  and ‘A mix of Joy and amazement…one of the most interesting works seen at Salone del Mobile by Elle Décor Italia, Divine Inspiration is the first lighting release for Lee Broom in four years.

The exhibition showcased new products in a range of materials including carved oak, extruded aluminum and Jesmonite. The new pieces also include a limited-edition collection in white plaster which has been hand-crafted by the designer himself.

Renowned for his theatrical product installations, the show took you on an experiential journey inspired by places of worship, exploring how light is often linked to hallowed places, evoking a sense of stillness, reverence and contemplation.

A series of six dramatic installations were created, with each new product showcased in its own carefully curated environment designed to evoke awe and intrigue. As the viewer walked through each space the mood altered profoundly, allowing them time and space with each piece.

Divine Inspiration began with Broom’s research into the world of Brutalist architecture. This led him to explore places of worship throughout the ages and the monumental design language associated with religious architecture, interiors and artifacts. With a leaning towards the pared-back silhouettes of Modernism and the Brutalist architecture that surrounded Broom as he grew up.

A two minute film of the exhibition can be viewed below along with a 360 tour of the exhibition space, giving you a sense of the scale and impact Divine Inspiration had on the 2022 Milan Design Week.

Introduction | Hangman Collection – Rakumba

HANGMAN

Rakumba x Adam Goodrum

A combination of mischievous nostalgia and avant-garde sculpture, Hangman is the first collaboration between Rakumba and esteemed Australian designer, Adam Goodrum.

Inspired by the universally recognised analogue game of ‘Hangman’, this collection of floor, table and pendant luminaires embodies playful design and simple, yet magically executed geometry.

Hangman: Distilled nostalgia from daring geometries.

“I’ve always loved art and mathematics, and I lean heavily on these in my process, with design evolving from the combination of both. ”  Adam Goodrum

“I wanted to distil the feeling of putting a pencil to a page, where the possibilities are endless. The range is about versatility, about your own imagination, to be used like a 3D drawing.”  Adam Goodrum

Comprising multiple articulated segments that swivel with an irresistible haptic action, each Hangman light is capable of a surprisingly acrobatic and visually intriguing range of positions.

Pairing this directionality with the jewel-like polished glow of a high performance LED optic tip, Hangman delivers unexpected functionality, channelling light to key points within a space while contributing its own iconic personality.

“The graphic simplicity of Hangman hides complex engineering – an ambitious, paradoxical design problem resolved through technical nous and desire to innovate.”

Hangman channels light through a minimalist structure, while simultaneously allowing a high degree of functionality with numerous positions and light directions.”

“The lights echo the gestural form of the “Hangman” game with a stick figure-like personality. It has a typographic quality, which draws on the game’s word based mechanic and analogue interaction.”

Finishes

With a nod to the enduring materiality of ageless works by Ray and Charles Eames and Marc Newson, Hangman is available in finishes of anodised black and raw polished aluminium designed to elegantly patina over time.

Introduction | Milky Way Collection – Giopato & Coombes

Milky Way Collection

Fragments Of Infinity

Imagination is a universe. We are designers. For us, exploring the mind means being suspended in an immense space, moving between ideas that gravitate freely, in a whirlwind of directions. A dimension of pure energy, where inspiration takes shape only if time stops for a moment.

A moment, just like in space, where light meets matter. Their unity emerges in a unique balance, through a design of compositions, between emptiness, fullness, and geometric elements.
Harmony crystallizes in a fragment of time and space. It is infinity, in an instant.

Cristiana & Christopher

For the Milky Way collection, our research focuses on the balance between poetry and functionality. A dialogue between horizontal and vertical lines, linearity and fluidity.

We imagined the linear structure in aluminum, as a solid and light ingot. The light source is protected by cathedral glass, which creates the sensation of a lake of light, thanks to its slightly wavy detail.

We imagined the linear structure in aluminum, as a solid and light ingot. The light source is protected by cathedral glass, which creates the sensation of a lake of light, thanks to its slightly wavy detail.

A balance of shape and lines, as when a composition becomes an infinite horizon before our eyes.
Milky Way is a daydream where light creates a symphony of magical, timeless moments in the living spaces.

Introduction | Ramus Collection – Rakumba

A rare ability of this extending structure to link back upon itself evokes diverse narratives, from the botanical, to the astronomical and molecular.

Infinitely extensible in any dimension, the arms may be plugged in at nonplanar angles, building three-dimensional structures of great intricacy.

^The mouth-blown glass beads can be ‘strung’ together in any order to create a bespoke glowing piece of jewelry for your home.

^Like a kaleidoscope, the glass shapes have been designed to offer infinite interpretations of tone, shape, and refracted light.
